Great turnout for 40th celebrations!

The congregation at the main 40th anniversary service included many who had attended Ballam School before it was consecrated in the name of St Matthew by the Bishop of Blackburn (Stewart Cross) back in 1985.

Rev Philip took the lead supported by readings, poems and reminiscences from Mary Ellison, Harry Gardner and myself.

Keith Dobson, a pupil at the school back in the early 1940s, took the offertory plate, four hymns were sung with gusto and there was a super turnout from across the Benefice.

Particular thanks to our good friends at Weeton for taking the decision to cancel their scheduled service in order to support us. A great gesture, much appreciated.

A generous selection of homemade cakes, provided by the social committee, combined with a drop of Sherry and soft drinks completed a really lovely occasion. Organist Dick Hardy was also on top form.

Popular keyboard/vocalist Johnny B returned to put on a great concert on the Friday night, full of energy, enthusiasm and singalong songs … pity we couldn’t find space for dancing (although some seemed to manage a jive at their seats!).

Thanks again to all who either contributed or attended the two events. We always believed that the 40th milestone was worth marking, but I must say that the outcome surpassed our expectations.
